Tokyo is Japan’s capital and a major metropolitan centre of business and culture. When it comes to weather, winters are cold and people enjoy skiing, but the interiors of buildings often are not well-heated. For Tokyo weather, summertime is the rainy season. People travel to the city for a variety of reasons, but the weather is best during the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom or autumn when the hardwood trees put on a colour show.
Yearly Precipitation
An average of about 1,500 mm precipitation falls annually, but over 70 per cent of the rain falls during the summer. Typhoon season brings torrential rains from July through September. September has the most rain with approximately 210 mm, and January has the least with about 50 mm.
Seasonal Weather
Spring – From March until May are the months of springtime in Tokyo. From March to April the city parks are spectacular with cherry blossoms. March may receive up to 2 snow days.
Summer – June through August are rainy. The typhoons come through in August and September bringing especially heavy downpours. The monthly high temperatures range from 25 to 31 degrees Celsius.
Autumn – The months of autumn are September through November. The season often begins with typhoons but soon calms down to some of the best weather days of the year. The trees have spectacular colours as well.
Winter – For December through February, the winter months bring cold and some snow. The average temperature lows fall between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius.
