Hiroshima is a modern, cosmopolitan city located on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea. Most known around the world for the atomic bomb attack in 1945 that destroyed much of the infrastructure within the city, the area has since recovered and prides itself as an industrial, urban area with wide, open spaces for travellers to explore on their Hiroshima holidays.

Activities in Hiroshima are abundant for tourists. The city is very safe and friendly and the English level is very high among many residents, making it easy for visitors to ask questions and find and enjoy attractions. One of the most popular destinations is Peace Memorial Park, which is one of the sights related to the atomic bomb attack. Two other near-by memorials are Chuo Park and Shukkeien.

A popular style of eating in the area is okonomiyaki, which means “cook it how you like it”. This dish is a unique-tasting pancake made with egg, cabbage, soba noodles, and meat or other additives. It is grilled in layers on a hot plate in front of you and slathered liberally with okonomiyaki sauce. After enjoying this meal, many tourists go out to indulge in the lush and chic nightlife the city is known for. There are many bars available for those looking to try new drinks and they serve as a great way to meet locals hoping to practice their English.

The best time to visit Hiroshima is in October and November, when the weather is cool and dry. July and August are the worst months to visit as the air is muggy and there are torrential downpours.
